2023 NFL Draft Positional Predictions
I know, I know. I have more commentary on the upcoming NFL Draft. I have at least two more mock drafts to do before next Thursday, but I wanted to point out a few things before the draft happens.
Quarterbacks Will Not Be Drafted Where People Expect
First of all, I think that the media has way overhyped the QBs in this class. Over the last few months, there has been countless hours of analysts saying that there is the potential to have four QBs go in the first four picks of the draft. This was never likely as much as people wanted it to happen.
I do think Bryce Young will go first overall along with one other guy in the top five. There are too many blue chip players on the defensive line that I think NFL teams will covet and in turn not trade down from their top spots.
More Defensive Players Will be Picked in Round 1
I think that more defefensive players will be selected in the first round then players on the offensive side of the ball especially towards the end of the round. The teams who made it deeper into the playoffs will look to add more depth to their defense. There will be at least five cornerbacks and five defensive lineman in the top 20 picks. That leads me to my next take...
Wide Receivers Will Go Fast on Day 2 of the Draft
Because of the run on cornerbacks this year, I think that the wide receivers will come off the board more in the second and third rounds of the draft. Recently, there have been some reports that Jaxson Smith-Njigba (adequately nicknamed JSN) and Zay Flowers are labeled as first rounders. Personally, I do think the rest of the WR class will be drafted pretty quickly to start the second round.
Only One Running Back Selected in Round 1
Arguably the best skill player in the draft goes in the first round, but is the only one in his position to do so. The value of running backs is perhaps at one of the lowest points in recent memory. You will be hard pressed to find a team that will reach for a running back in the first round when they know that this class is deep at the position. Gibbs out of Alabama could sneak in late, but there hasnt been much of a trend for that to happen in recent years after Kansas City took Clyde Edwards-Helaire a few seasons ago.
